Immediately after the independence of India, the British were quick to disinvest their commercial interests in the Indian tea industry. During this time, Late Mr. G. P. Mantri acquired the Manipur Tea Estate located in Assam, and laid the foundations for the establishment of the tea division of the group.

We have continued to grow and consolidate our position in the industry over the past six decades with the acquisition of three more tea estates in Assam as we have emerged to be one of the largest producers of CTC tea in the Cachar tea growing region in Assam. Our relentless efforts for plantation and infrastructure development at all our estates have seen the annual production of the group rise almost five-folds over the last decade and a half to reach a level of approximately 4 to 4.5 million kilograms of high quality CTC tea. Tea Production over the years

Tea Production over the years

The four estates of the Group are the Manipur Tea Estate, Ruttonpore Tea Estate, Derby Tea Estate and Pathini Tea Estate. We have created some of the best as well as the most modern infrastructure of the industry at all these estates. Each of the estates has its own state-of-the-art online processing and packaging facilities which are amongst the most automated in the industry. The combined installed capacities at our estates are adequate for processing up to 6 million kilograms of CTC tea.

Mr. Kamlesh Singh heads the four tea estates locally as the Resident Director. The combined gross area of the estates totals to approximately 6200 hectares with roughly 2700 hectares under tea plantation. The total bush population of these plantations totals to in excess of 36 million tea bushes which are passionately cultivated and maintained by the aggregate work-force of approximately 4500 dedicated workers. To safeguard and strengthen our plantations, we have pioneered the use of fixed-line underground irrigation systems linked to perennial sources of water.

The Group has established a robust marketing network in our primary markets of north and north-west India. Our teas are marketed under a host of brand names in multiple packaging options ranging from jute bags, tea packets, tea cartons, and tea bags. The prominent brand names of the Group are Manipur, Ruttonpore, Derby, Vasundhara, Anjaneya, Suprabha, Rugby and Pathini.

The DM Group has also initiated and executed several social welfare activities for the benefit of the resident populations of our tea estates. Over the years, numerous schools, junior colleges, hospitals and temples have been constructed and renovated. Clean drinking water has been provided in partnership with the local governments. An annual feature of the district which enjoys immense popularity is the Govind Prasad Mantri Memorial Football Tournament which is enthusiastically organized, sponsored and supported by the Group.

Manipur Tea Estate

The Manipur Tea Estate, located in the Hailakandi district of Assam was our first acquisition. The garden was purchased from Gillanders Artbuthnot & Co. Limited, on 1st January 1954. Originally a seed producing estate under the previous management, the estate was totally devastated by severe floods in 1929, following which it was developed as a tea producing estate. The oldest plants in the estate date back almost a century and are of the Chinese hybrid variety.

From an area of about 220 hectares under tea cultivation at the time of the takeover, we have nurtured and developed the garden to its present size of about 600 hectares under tea cultivation. The bush population has risen to about 8 million plants and the estate presently produces about 1 million kilograms of CTC tea.

The processing unit of the estate is fully online and automated and has installed capacities to process and produce up to 1.5 million kilograms of CTC tea annually under the most hygienic and quality conscious environment. Manipur and Anjaneya are our brands to market the produce of this estate.

Ruttonpore Tea Estate

We acquired the Ruttonpore Tea Estate, located in the Cachar district of Assam, on 10th May 1986. Today, the garden is recognized as one of the youngest tea plantations with more than 90% of the bush population being younger than twenty years of age.

At the time of takeover, the land under tea cultivation was about 270 hectares with a bush population of 0.9 million plants. The production of the estate, then, was approximately 0.18million kilograms of CTC tea. Our vision at the time of acquisition was to develop this property into a large and high yielding tea estate. As a result of sustained and planned investments, Ruttonpore Tea Estate presently has approximately 800 hectares under tea cultivation, a bush population nearing 12 million plants, and an annual production in the range of 1.5 million kilograms of CTC tea.

The tea processing and packaging unit is a compact facility with modern, online and fully automated capacities to produce both CTC and orthodox teas. This factory has an installed capacity of processing up to 1.5 million kilograms of CTC tea annually under the most hygienic and quality conscious environments and has facilities to package up to 1 million kilograms of tea in laminated tea packets for retail sales. The produce is marketed under the brands Ruttonpore and Suprabha.

Derby Tea Estate

The Derby Tea Estate located in the Cachar district of Assam, was acquired by the Group on 5th October 2005. The estate, with its heritage of being amongst the finest properties in the district, was developed by a British jockey with the prize money he had won in the Calcutta Derby.

Since the takeover, vital plantation development has been undertaken to rejuvenate the ageing bushes. The processing and packaging unit has been completely revamped into a state-of-the-art facility with upgraded capacities for producing up to 1.25 million kilograms of CTC tea.

With the area under tea cultivation standing at about 500 hectares and a bush population of about 6.5 million plants, the current production is about 1.1 million kg of CTC tea. The produce is marketed under the brand names Derby and Rugby.

Pathini Tea Estate

The Pathini Tea Estates located in the Karimganj district of Assam, was acquired from the Tea Trading Corporation of India on 29th August 2006. The estate was deemed owner-less after the partition of India in 1947. As a result, it was subsequently nationalized and entrusted to the Tea Trading Corporation of India. The estate has amongst the largest grant areas, of about 2346 hectares available for cultivation.

For more than a decade and a half, from the early 1990s, the garden was in a state of devastating neglect. Consequently, the entire infrastructure of the estate was in a state of ruin at the time of the takeover. Since the acquisition, a plantation development program has been undertaken to revive and rejuvenate the 810.10 hectares which were originally under tea cultivation. The garden infrastructure developed since the takeover ranks amongst the best in the industry.

We have set up a modern, automated and fully online CTC tea processing and packaging facility. The unit was commissioned on 16th Match 2009 to have installed capacities for processing up to 1.25 million kilograms of made tea, in the most hygienic and quality conscious environments, annually. The present production of the estate is in the range of 0.85 million kilogram and its produce is marketed under the brand names Vasundhara and Pathini.
